LGBTQIA+

So many letters, so little time.

So how do I know which one I am? And even if I do, what I supposed to do with this information?!

Great questions - particularly for therapy 😉

Firstly, here are some resources for basic queer knowledge and local services:

Hopefully, these links clarified a few things for you!

The queer spectrum is wide, but the queer experiences are even wider.

Therapy is for the gays!

Whether you’re out and proud or questioning your entire life, therapy is a way to process all that comes with those experiences and everything in between.

I think the thing that makes therapy different for LGBTQ+ folks is the “knowing”-ness of it all. It’s a deep understanding that comes from sharing a lived experience. As a queer person myself, I cherish this connection with others, especially within the therapeutic relationship.

Members of the queer community know that we experience higher rates of mental health struggles: depression, anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders (surprise! again!), etc. The struggles of otherness in so many ways really puts a damper on our identity development and our ability to find peace internally and externally.

BUT.

We also know that despite the struggles, members of the queer community are some of the most brilliant, resilient, creative, determined, loving people to grace this planet.

It’s often hard to see those qualities within, but sometimes all it takes is a little support from your people to really let that light burn bright. Therapy can be a part of that journey.
